Do you owe tax on BetRivers winnings?

Every dollar you win is taxable income, whether or not anyone sent you a form. Losses come off only if you itemize, and only up to your winnings. From tax year 2026 you may deduct just 90 percent of your losses, so breaking even now produces taxable income.

Take the standard deduction, which most filers do, and the losses do nothing at all. Your gross winnings are taxed in full.

A sportsbook reports individual qualifying wins on Form W-2G. A W-2G does not show your yearly profit or loss, so it is never a measure of what you owe.

The thresholds, as BetRivers states them

What BetRivers says triggers a form

BetRivers’s own wording, not the rule. Operators restate the law, and their wording is not always correct.

  • A taxable slot win must be at least $1,200
  • A taxable sports or table game bet must be at least $600 and 300 times the wager
  • Withholding of 24 percent where a taxable win is over $500 and 300 times the bet

Where these figures and the rule in force differ

  • $600, $1,200: Superseded for 2026 payments, now $2,000
  • $500: Wrong

Two figures are below the 2026 floor and one is wrong. The sports, table and slots thresholds all rose to $2,000 for payments made after 31 December 2025. The withholding figure is out by a factor of ten, because 26 U.S.C. 3402(q)(3)(A) sets it above $5,000. These figures come from partner documents from about 2021, because BetRivers itself publishes nothing you can read without logging in.

For a sportsbook wager, the reporting threshold is set by 26 U.S.C. 6041(a), which section 70433(a) of Public Law 119-21 raised from $600 to $2,000 for payments made after 31 December 2025. A sportsbook W-2G also needs winnings of at least 300 times the wager. That change also reaches slot machines, bingo and keno. 26 CFR 1.6041-10 still prints $1,200 for slots and bingo and $1,500 for keno, but the Treasury says the statutory floor applies regardless (REG-113229-25), so $2,000 is the figure for all three for payments made in 2026. Some casinos may still issue a form at the lower figures. That does not change what you owe. Every dollar of gambling winnings is taxable whether or not a form arrives, so do not read a missing form as a missing tax bill. How the W-2G threshold works.

Worth knowing

  • BetRivers is the only operator on this site whose tax help you cannot read at all without logging in. Every state help centre, and even its search, asks you to sign in. Search engines show the article title, but the article itself is not public.
  • Each state has its own separate help centre, so a multi-state customer has more than one account and more than one place to look.
  • The operating company differs by state and is not called BetRivers. In Pennsylvania alone four legal names appear, and BetRivers is only the trademark.

What we could not confirm

We could not confirm the company name that appears on the form or whether a win/loss statement is available from a page BetRivers publishes that we could read. We have left those out rather than guess.
