Do you owe tax on BetMGM winnings?

Every dollar you win is taxable income, whether or not anyone sent you a form. Losses come off only if you itemize, and only up to your winnings. From tax year 2026 you may deduct just 90 percent of your losses, so breaking even now produces taxable income.

Take the standard deduction, which most filers do, and the losses do nothing at all. Your gross winnings are taxed in full.

A sportsbook reports individual qualifying wins on Form W-2G. A W-2G does not show your yearly profit or loss, so it is never a measure of what you owe.

What BetMGM issues

2, 3
  • Form W-2G
  • Form 1099-MISC, for promotional prizes such as free-roll winnings, trips or hotel stays
  • An End of Year Statement, which BetMGM says is not for tax use
  • A Casino Patron Report, their tax diary, available only on request

When it appears

1

W-2G downloadable by January 31. The End of Year Statement appears on February 1 for the previous year. BetMGM gives no date for the 1099.

The thresholds, as BetMGM states them

What BetMGM says triggers a form

BetMGM’s own wording, not the rule. Operators restate the law, and their wording is not always correct.

  • Bingo or slot machines at $2,000 or more
  • Keno at $2,000 or more, reduced by the wager
  • Poker tournaments above $5,000, reduced by the buy-in
  • Other winnings at $2,000 or more where the payout is at least 300 times the wager
  • No withholding between $2,000 and $5,000. At $5,000 and above, 24 percent is withheld immediately
  • Bonus bets are not deducted from the win

For a sportsbook wager, the reporting threshold is set by 26 U.S.C. 6041(a), which section 70433(a) of Public Law 119-21 raised from $600 to $2,000 for payments made after 31 December 2025. A sportsbook W-2G also needs winnings of at least 300 times the wager. That change also reaches slot machines, bingo and keno. 26 CFR 1.6041-10 still prints $1,200 for slots and bingo and $1,500 for keno, but the Treasury says the statutory floor applies regardless (REG-113229-25), so $2,000 is the figure for all three for payments made in 2026. Some casinos may still issue a form at the lower figures. That does not change what you owe. Every dollar of gambling winnings is taxable whether or not a form arrives, so do not read a missing form as a missing tax bill. How the W-2G threshold works.

How many forms to expect

1

One W-2G per game type per 24 hours, across Casino, Sports and Poker, and never consolidated across a full year. Multiple qualifying wins produce multiple forms.

The win/loss statement, which is not your tax form

2

BetMGM states twice that the End of Year Statement is not a legal document intended for tax reporting, and directs you to request a Casino Patron Report instead. It also says you are required to track your own play.

This is the document a session log is built from, and the one most often mistaken for a tax form. Per wager or per session, and why it changes your bill.

Worth knowing

  • BetMGM treats acceptance of its terms of service as your signature on a W-2G where tax was withheld. You are not asked to sign anything.
  • BetMGM says to submit your W-2G and to request a Casino Patron Report for your tax adviser, and warns not to rely on that report alone. It cannot be downloaded. It has to be requested from customer care.
  • There is no single national help centre. BetMGM runs a separate help site for each state, and each one we checked is laid out the same way.
  • A sports-only state gets a Sports Betting History Report instead, also on request.
  • Many other sites tell you to go to Profile, then Financial Center. We could not find that path on a BetMGM page we could read.

What we could not confirm

We could not confirm the company name that appears on the form, where in the app the form sits or how the form reaches you from a page BetMGM publishes that we could read. We have left those out rather than guess.
